๐Ÿ“ MDF (Minimum Defense Frequency)

What is MDF?

The minimum call frequency needed to make an opponent's bluff break even. MDF = Pot Size รท (Pot Size + Bet Size)

Exploit Adjustment

MDF is a GTO theoretical baseline. If opponent over-bluffs, call more frequently than MDF. If opponent is value-heavy (rarely bluffs), fold more frequently than MDF.

๐ŸŽฏ Countering Over-Bluffers

How to Identify Over-Bluffers
  • AF (Aggression Factor) of 5+
  • Low W$SD (under 45%) despite high WTSD
  • High river bet frequency but negative winnings
  • Has shown multiple bluffs at showdown
Counters vs Over-Bluffers
  • Increase call-down frequency
  • Call medium hands more often than MDF
  • Check-call to trap
  • Slow-play to let them keep bluffing
  • Limit raises (they'll fold)
What NOT to Do
  • Folding and letting their bluffs succeed
  • Raising strong hands to fold them out
  • Excessive check-raise bluffing yourself

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Countering Value-Heavy Players

How to Identify Value-Heavy Players
  • Low river bet frequency (only bets value carefully)
  • W$SD of 55%+ (high showdown win rate)
  • Nit-like playing style
  • Rarely shows bluffs at showdown
Counters vs Value-Heavy Players
  • Call less than MDF (more folding is fine)
  • Fold aggressively to raises
  • Your bluffs have high EV (they fold often)
  • Their river value bets: call only with near-nuts

๐Ÿงฑ Blockers in Bluff-Catching Decisions

Blockers are cards you hold that reduce the combinations of strong hands your opponent can have, narrowing their value range.

๐ŸŒŠ River Bluff-Catch Decision Flow

River Call Decision Steps
  1. Calculate pot odds: Amount to call รท (pot + call amount) = required equity
  2. Estimate opponent's betting range: Consider the ratio of value hands to bluffs
  3. Identify player type: Over-bluffer โ†’ call more. Value-heavy โ†’ fold more
  4. Check blockers: Does your hand block their value range?
  5. Decide: If your equity > required equity โ†’ call
