📖 Multiway Fundamentals

Key Differences from Heads-Up
  • Bluff EV collapses: Getting 3 players to fold is ~0.5×0.5=25% chance. Bluffs almost never work
  • Hand strength requirements rise: Fewer chances you hold the best hand with more opponents
  • Nut orientation: Be aggressive only with completed draws and strong made hands
  • Position value increases: Acting last while seeing everyone else's actions is even more valuable

3-way~25%Semi-bluffs only. Reduce pure bluffs
4-way~12%Value only. Nut-oriented
5-way+~6%Nuts only. Fold more

💪 Re-Evaluating Hand Strength

Hands That Gain Value Multiway
  • Sets (full house potential)
  • Nut flushes / nut straights
  • Suited connectors with strong draw potential
  • Two pair or better strong made hands
  • Nut draw with blockers
Hands That Lose Value Multiway
  • Overpairs (sets beat them)
  • Weak top pair (beaten by multiple opponents)
  • Blank hands with no backdoor draw
  • Pure bluff hands
  • Weak draws out of position
Caution with Overpairs

HU, KK/AA is almost always a value bet. But in a 4-way+ pot, someone holding a set or two pair becomes increasingly likely. On wet boards 4-way, even KK may be a check.

🧭 By Position

  • Decide after seeing everyone: If it checks to you, some weaker hands can bet
  • Indirect pot control: If someone else bets, call cheaply rather than raising
  • Take free cards: If it checks to you, check back and take the free card
  • Raise to isolate: Raise strong hands when someone bets to eliminate others
  • Hardest position: You know earlier action but face pressure from behind
  • Donk betting viable: Donk strong hands when early players check
  • 3-bet or fold over calling: Flat calls multiway risk squeeze plays
  • Check-call defensively: Betting OOP is high risk
  • Donk strong hands: Rather than waiting for someone behind to bet, lead out
  • Fold more: Multiway OOP is severely disadvantaged. Fold non-strong hands

🎯 Drawing Multiway

Draw Equity Stays High Multiway

Flush draw (36% equity) and straight draw (32% equity) are unchanged multiway. However, completing the draw may not guarantee the best hand — prioritize nut draws.

  • Nut draws: Semi-bluffs still viable multiway. Worth building the pot
  • Non-nut draws: Completing may still lose — rely on implied odds in limited spots
  • Combo draws (flush + straight): The strongest multiway holding — bet aggressively
  • After draw completes: Bet big with the nuts. Be cautious when multiple draws complete
