Two Types of LAG
  • Skilled LAG: Well-balanced. Hard to exploit — GTO approach may be needed
  • Spew LAG: Over-bluffs excessively. Call-down strategy generates profit
  • Compare WTSD% and W$SD%: high WTSD + low W$SD = spew LAG
  • AF 5+ and W$SD under 45% = call down aggressively

⚔️ Exploit Strategy

Core Approach: Call Down + 4-Bet Balance

LAGs bet wide ranges, so calling down with strong hands has high EV. Against frequent 3-bettors, 4-bet bluffs are also effective. Use position to counter-exploit.

  • 4-bet balance: Mix in A5s, A4s bluff 4-bets alongside AA/KK vs their 3-bets. Check their Fold to 4-bet
  • Wide call range: Call 3-bets with JJ, TT, AQ, KQs in position. Profit postflop against their high c-bet frequency
  • Limit limp ISOs: LAGs will raise anyway, so engage them directly rather than isolating limps
  • Squeeze works: Squeeze when LAG opens and there's a caller
  • Call-down strategy: Call down with top pair+ vs LAG c-bets. Their range is wide with many bluffs
  • Check-raise: Check-raise strong hands. LAGs will always c-bet
  • Careful floating: Skilled LAGs apply pressure on the turn too — don't over-float
  • Donk bets work OOP: Donk strong hands in OOP. Controls pot vs their c-bet frequency
  • IP (In Position): Optimal counter — easy to call down, can take free cards. Call wide
  • OOP (Out of Position): Very difficult. Play strong hands only. Choose check-call or donk bet
  • From BB: Against BTN LAG opens, use strong hands for 3-bet/fold — avoid marginal calls
  • From BTN: If LAG is in SB/BB, open wider

🎯 LAG Counter — 3-Bet/4-Bet Range

Range Construction
  • Build 4-bet balance against their high 3-bet frequency
  • Value 4-bet: AA, KK (QQ situation-dependent)
  • Bluff 4-bet: A5s, A4s (A blocker + suited)
  • Call: JJ, TT, AQ, KQs (IP only — widen range)

🎮 Cash vs Tournament

Cash Game
  • Deep stacks allow LAGs more bluffs — lower your call-down threshold
  • Table selection: seat to the left of a LAG to act after them
  • Track their Cbet/turn Cbet/river bet frequency with HUD for call-down decisions
Tournament
  • LAG under ICM pressure is one of the most dangerous opponents. Be aware of call costs
  • Near the bubble, handle LAG attacks tightly — prioritize loss prevention
  • At the final table, fold marginal hands vs LAG rather than 3-betting

⚠️ Common Mistakes

What NOT to Do
  • Folding everything to LAG: That's exactly what they want — call down to counter
  • Bluffing skilled LAGs: Skilled LAGs catch bluffs well
  • Calling OOP with weak hands: OOP call-downs hand positional advantage to the LAG
  • Too small 4-bets: 4-bet to appropriate sizing vs LAGs (roughly 3x their 3-bet)
