How to Identify
- Folds for long stretches, plays very infrequently
- When they do play, their range is extremely narrow
- Folds to 3-bets almost 100% (except premiums)
- Prefers raising over calling (though rarely)
- Easily gives up blinds
🔍 Weaknesses & Strengths
Nit Weaknesses
- Very high fold equity
- Rarely defends blinds
- Folds to 3-bets almost always
- Gives up many pots preflop
- Range is highly readable postflop
Where Nits Are Strong
- When they enter, they usually have it
- Their raises/3-bets are nearly always the nuts
- Hard to bluff them off a hand
- Only continue postflop with strong holdings
- High showdown win rate
⚔️ Exploit Strategy
Core Approach: Steal and Exploit Fold Equity
Nits bleed small pots (blinds) by folding constantly. Attack from BTN/CO/SB with aggressive steals. They fold to raises and 3-bets most of the time, so bluffs have high value.
- Wide blind steals: Open wide from BTN/CO/SB vs nit BB/SB. Exploit their high fold rate
- 3-bet bluffs work: 3-bet bluff nit opens. With Fold to 3-bet 70%+, go for it
- Wide calls with position: Call their opens wide if you have position (readable range)
- Respect 4-bets: A nit's 4-bet is almost AA/KK — fold is usually correct
- Float often: Call nit c-bet on flop, then apply pressure on the turn when they check
- C-bets work: Nits fold frequently on the flop when they miss
- Their range is transparent: Nit betting turn/river = strong hand. Consider folding
- Respect check-raises: A nit's check-raise = near nuts. Fold immediately
- Entry = strong hand: Assume 88+, AJ+ when a nit plays
- Open raise = premium: Nit's open is TT+, AQ+. Their 3-bet/4-bet is AA/KK only
- Call = speculative: Nits call with 55-77 for set mining, suited connectors, etc.
- Flop call: Nit calling the flop = strong draw or weak made hand only
🎯 Nit Counter — Steal Range
Steal range from BTN/CO vs nit's BB. High fold equity allows very wide opening.
Steal Range Notes
- If nit's Fold to Steal is 75%+, even a 2BB open is EV+
- Ace-high hands gain extra EV from blocker effects
- Attack wide as long as you have position
🎮 Cash vs Tournament
Cash Game
- Nits are long-term losers — consistently steal their blinds
- Use HUD to track Fold to Steal, Fold to 3-bet, and exploit accordingly
- Understand their calling range to extract postflop profit
Tournament
- Near the bubble, nits get even tighter — ICM-aware steals are highly effective
- Nits are extremely ICM-sensitive — push/shove forces frequent folds
- But their 4-bets and all-ins are very strong — proceed with caution
⚠️ Common Mistakes
What NOT to Do
- Being too respectful: Exploit the fact that they don't play by attacking aggressively
- Calling their 4-bets: A nit's 4-bet is almost AA/KK — calling AQ or JJ is a mistake
- Over-bluffing when they enter: When a nit enters, they have a hand — don't bluff excessively
- Skipping steals: Fold equity vs nits is at its peak — exploit it constantly
